    My little rant...

I don't understand what all the complaining is about. The 360 Elite is not ment to be purchased by everyone. They are still offering the Core and Premium systems and they will continue to offer the 20 gig and 120 gig hard drives. If you don't want HDMI, then just get one of the other two systems. If you don't want a black 360, get one of the others. If you want wireless, buy the adapter. Its the same system just with different options. To me, its like buying a car. If you want a bigger engine, you pay a bit more. You want leather seats?? That will cost you extra. At least Microsoft is offering you a choice, unlike Sony who is forcing a $600 console down your throat.

The way I look at it, if you want to buy a 360 just to play games, you can get a Core system for $300. Heck you can even get them used for around $250 now. If you want to add media content (download movies, music, whatever), you get the Premium. And if you are a tech nut, get the Elite. Its up to the buyer to decide what they are going to use the system for and there is no sense in charging someone for something they won't use. And sure, Microsoft is making money off this model. Really, how many people that own a 360 own the HD-DVD drive, the wireless adapter, the XBox camera, etc?? Again, at least Microsoft is giving you a choice.

Almost everyone is ignoring what the 360's primary use is: TO PLAY GAMES! Sure the media content and voice/video chat is there as well but thats not its main purpose. Its like someone buying a Mac and then bitching about no games being available to play on it. You don't buy a Mac only to play games, you don't buy a 360 only to watch videos.

    ...End of rant

With all that said, I'm still going to buy the Elite version if my stolen 360 doesn't show up by April 29th. My 20 gig HD was nearly overflowing and I found myself having to delete stuff on a regular basis. The HDMI will be nice to have and the black color will match most of the stuff in my entertainment center. Again, this is how I will use it. It may not be everyone's opinion so stop with the "Oooo Microsoft is teh sux and only wants my $$"

Schools always have police around so it could easily be taken away but why would a school have the right to take something away. I never had this problem in college but in high school they tried to take my iPhone and I wouldn't let them. I said they have no right to take it, they called the police down to the class I was in but by the time they arrived the school days just barely ended. Everything turned out ok.

For you it turned out fine... That time... If you are asked to give it up, be reasonable and ask if you may retrieve it at the end of the day. If you put up a fight they may think you are up to something and it can get worse. The OP stated he did nothing wrong, so just give it up until the end of the day and then simply take it home. Pick your battles wisely. If you want to change that policy, do it the right way.

Magnesium is also used for underwater and air flares. So, I suppose if you're out at sea and your diving lights go out, you could tinder the ol' iPod as an underwater torch. Or, maybe if you're being chased by heat-seeking missiles you could ignite your iPod and toss it out the window...

I'm sure whatever they do it will be fine, though...

I hope you are right, but it Apple has taken a decidedly Online only approach to Final Cut X rather than the old school model of NLE for EDL creation.

That's great for a lot of people, but you do have to wonder how that new timeline kicks out an EDL, don't you? T

he majority of productions are still tape based for now, but it is shifting rather quickly (especially with the HDSR shortage). I would imagine that Apple is gambling on the inevitable future of tapeless workflows and so I don't think it would be that crazy for them to leave out traditional tools for NLE to Online workflows.

Guaranteed that they wouldn't get rid of something so basic as OMF or EDL exports. Why would they? OMFs and EDLs are used for things other than exports for onlining to tape.

Think about it logically... they have support for 4K. 90% of people shooting 4K are going to do serious color timing with a DI. That's a figure I'm pulling out of my a**, but you get the idea. To do a thorough DI you gotta give them an EDL and all your clips, end of story. As for tapeless finishing, wouldn't you still want to give the sound editors and mixers audio OMFs? Good sound has nothing to do with being tapeless or not. These are just a couple of examples.

Your rebuttel makes no sense. He's not talking just about himself but in general about the risk of defection among people that arent willing to wait. Himself being an example.

With the fierce competition iOS faces from android right now and maybe also nokia by then, you seem like a fanboy out of touch with the present market reality. You can be sure he wont be the only one pondering this. Very risky move from apple if they would delay the next iphone IMNSHO.

I don't see any risk. Apple buyers are sufficiently ignorant of other choices, and too vain to be seen with anything without the Apple logo to prove their cool.

They will, as the white holdouts, wait for an unreasonable amount of time. Even if at their own expense. Apple had them right where they want them. waiting with baited breath.

Oh Gosh is this guy our version of the Dell Dude.

No. Steve Jobs has consistantly talked about the Mac Culture having class. The Windows culture doesn't. The ad about the Mac home video illustrates this point, with Gisele. That Dell has some random pothead trying to sound hip and the Get a Mac ads have Justin Long, a successful actor and purported teenage-heart-throb, further illustrates this point. This is the same reason Apple spend $4M on the 1984 ad and had Jeff Goldblum and Richard Dryfus narrate their TV ads while PC ads usually have spinning text and always end with the Intel doorbell.

I never thought of myself as an iMac type of guy. More of a MBP for work, Mac Pro for home.

But the 24" iMac is shaping up to be a great computer. 750 gig drive is sweet, 3 gigs of memory, huge display, and fast.

I always hated the wires and general visual mess of the normal desktop. Even in the age of bluetooth, there are too many wires.

I think the 24" iMac is shaping up to be a great prosumer computer. I'm seriously considering purchasing one now.

So, some crazy bitch climbs on the hood of your car to keep you from leaving and you just have to put up with that?

I'm sorry, I'm not saying the guy should get a free pass, but at some point her own idiocy has to bear some of the blame for this.

According to the article, he was on drugs. It's likely she was trying to prevent him from leaving for his own safety.

I'm all for companies protecting their IP.

However, it seems like Nokia is grasping at straws here since they've been turn down a couple times already.

Also... I really believe that there should be a time limit on when you can sue a company over an infringement when there is a shipping product involved. Waiting until it's wildly successful and then suing is silly. If they cared so much about their IP, they should have sued 4 years ago when the iPhone came out.

I used to use ClarisWorks on a Performa 450. I thought it was a great piece of word processing software. I published a magazine using Home Publisher but always used ClarisWorks for the basic 'typewriting'. It was a clean, elegant and simple solution that worked for me. I continued to use ClarisWorks' successor, ApoleWorks for the same reasons. It was a headache-free and reliable solution to my needs.

Eventually, as an editor with a music magazine I was required to interface with PC users and after much trial and error was able to set up some reasonable compatibility between my Mac's AppleWorks and Word for Mac software and the various Windows Word versions that the magazine's writers used. It wasn't problem-free but by and large it worked okay. I hated using the Word for Mac software, though. It was ugly and unpleasant to use, unlike Apple's WP software.

With the demise of Power PC and the introduction of Intel on the Mac, I eventually made the transition too but put off 'upgrading' my production process until a few months ago, instead continuing to use the iMac. With the MacBook I invested in Pages, AppleWorks' successor, and also Office for Mac 2011. I've grown to be comfortable enough with Pages (though I am not wholly convinced that it is as user-friendly as its predecessors) but I am alarmed at my experience with the Word element of Office 2011 for Mac.

I continue to use Apple's software to edit and generally wrestle with interview and review material before pasting it into Word for circulation to others whop use PCs. This editing requires the implementation of various house-styles and formatting. There are two things that currently concern me with Word in Office 2011when I am doing this.

First of all, when I receive a CD review from others, as a Word file, I copy and paste the review into Pages and edit it therein. My 'traditional' work practice. If, for example, a record label has been written in a mixture of upper and lower case, I correct it so that it is entirely in upper case, as per the house style. (That's done in Pages, remember!) When I subsequently copy and paste the CD review into a Word document and send it (and others) back to my chief editor, that upper case text will revert back to lower case! How bizarre is that! It is only when I change it in my Word file (rather than in Pages) that it remains fixed.

I'm assuming that this is a Microsoft issue rather than an Apple issue.

The other weird thing is when I copy and past a bunch of text (say a few dozen CD reviews) from Pages into Word, sometimes the text fails to paste in the correct manner, with spaces between punctuation that really ought not to be there. The only solution at this point is to quit Word and launch it again, after which the re-pasted text will be fine.

Over the years I have found Word's compatibility with other versions of itself to be less than reliable, to say the least. I remember a contact asking me if I could help him find a way of opening his Word file (written on a Windows 95 or 98 PC). None of his PC-owning friends had been able to open the file, and when he sent me a floppy disk with the same file I passed it on to my Windows-savvy colleague. He had no luck. It wouldn't open with whatever Windows/Word combinations he had available to him.

As I was about to return the floppy and its stubborn Word file to my contact, I realised I had an Apple Performa 6400 of a similar era to the time when the contact's Word file was created. What the hell, I thought, and fired up the old Performa. Sure enough, Apple's basic SimpleText software was able to open the Word file. I tried opening the same file on my old iMac G3 and again, no problem. AppleWorks was able to open it.

The lesson, I learned, was that Microsoft failed to make diligent efforts to ensure comprehensive compatibility with its own software whereas with Apple, "it just worked". Apple were more diligent and thorough with their Microsoft compatibility than Microsoft themselves!

There's a reason Apple's sales slogans resonate with Apple users, and it's because there's a profound measure of truth in them. "It just works!"

As for Microsoft, I cannot muster much respect for a software company that fails to make an appropriate amount of effort to respect its customers/users. And I simply do not trust the current version of Word in Office 2011.

I just wonder if that also measn the Macbook Pro will switch to Magnesium. I mean, Apple liked to make their things look similar to each other in terms of finish. If iPods and MacPros will be Magnesium (although I think Magnesium is a bit too tough and expensive for a computer standing on a floor or desk), it's very probable the MBP will follow with a new look and magnesium finish.

I know some guy whose 12" powerbook has fallen from not too high and its modem port hit a corner. Now the whole thing is a bit warped and there's a metal dent making it impossible to use the modem. That thing wouldn't have happened with a more elastic (in the phisical way) material. I'm just happy my Macbook is plastic. It looks a bit like from the 80s but I like that. :p
